The town is built on the site of the 17th Century castle that still remains here and is the site of the Torrington 1646 experience. The town ramparts are now a bowling green but the lookout tower remains. You can see by looking in terrain mode on the map that we are sitting on an escarpment over 300 feet above the River Torridge overlooking the land to the South, the reason the castle was built here.

With this Google map it is only necessary to use the controls to zoom or pan the whole district. The satellite image is several years out of date as there has been some local building but the main features of the town are the same. For this reason the weather station itself is not visible.
